Bachelor of Business in Tourism Management

Graduates of Southern Cross University’s award winning Bachelor of Business in Tourism Management degree have built successful tourism management careers throughout the world. Graduates of this course include professional managers in tourism businesses, government agencies, clubs, airlines, tourist attractions and other special interest tourism operations. This business degree is also assessed to meet the Standards of Excellence set by the Tourism and Hospitality Education-International Centre for Excellence (THE-ICE).

Delivered in partnership with Southern Cross University's School of Tourism and Hospitality Management the course also includes study in a wide range of core business subjects including management, marketing, human resource management, finance and law. Students are offered a degree structured to incorporate a balanced integration of University Studies and Nationally Registered Vocational Units enabling them to become familiar with all the practical aspects of the tourism industry. The degree also offers specialised electives including special interest tourism, tourism planning and conventions and events management.

Specific Award Rules

1 Requirements for this Award

a. To be eligible for the award of Bachelor of Business in Tourism Management, a candidate shall complete twenty-four (24) units.

2 Advanced Standing

a. Candidates who have successfully completed the requirements of the Associate Degree of Business in Tourism Management at this University, may be granted advanced standing for up to sixteen (16) units towards the Bachelor of Business in Tourism Management.
b. The School Board may grant advanced standing of up to sixteen (16) units, provided that:
1. a maximum of four (4) units are counted towards Intern Study; and
2 a maximum of twelve (12) units are counted towards units other than Intern Study.
c. Advanced Standing of up to eight (8) units may be granted to candidates who have completed another undergraduate award of the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management. In addition, a candidate may apply to the Head of School to substitute other units for those previously completed. Unit substitution does not reduce the number of units required to complete the course. Advanced Standing in excess of eight (8) units may be granted by the Head of School in exceptional circumstances.

Notes

1. Intern Study I-IV are taken at the end of the course as a block placement, usually in semester 6. All internship placements must be approved by the Internship Co-ordinator.
2. Units must be taken in the order that they are offered and at the discretion of the School Board.
3. Students enrolled for the Bachelor of Business in Tourism Management, who elect to exit after Year 1 will not qualify for the award of Diploma.
4. For the ASTHM award of Diploma of Tourism Management, students must successfully complete each of the eight units shown with the Unit Code prefix of “DIP”. This will require that DIP0009 & DIP0010 units in Second and Third Year exchange with the COM00207 & ACC10249 First Year Units.
5. The information in this prospectus is correct at the time of publishing. However, all programs are subject to ongoing review by the University Council.

Teaching Methods - Internal students, as a guide, may be expected to attend a two-hour lecture and one-hour tutorial per week in all units.

Learning Resources - Students have access to a dedicated unit website on MySCU. They are required to purchase textbooks. Students also have access to the largest Tourism Library Collection in Australia. There are also a number of databases available on the Library website that offer students access to electronic full-text journal literature and bibliographic citations of literature relevant to tourism and hospitality.

Assessment Methods
Students are assessed in each unit on the basis of written and/or oral assignments. These may be researched essays and reports, presentations, case studies or problem solutions. Students may also be asked to participate in group work as well as individual assignments. The usual weighting between assignments and examinations is about 50 per cent to each.
